


“A beacon of truth, a voice of reason and a source of inspiration for countless people, in India and beyond.” Thus the cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, paid tribute to the diocesan newsweekly The Examiner, on the occasion of the commencement of the 175 th anniversary celebration of The Examiner held on Sunday 10 March 2024 at Holy Name School Hall, Colaba, Mumbai.
At this momentous occasion, Fr (Dr) Plavendran Irudayasamy, gave a keynote address on Artificial Intelligence and Peace: the prospects and challenges in today’s media world. In his talk he presented five ideas in understanding the current media environment. These ideas are as follows: Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a fundamental relational quality of human intelligence; Promises and risks of artificial intelligence; Understanding the powerful ideas about medium; Ecological understanding of AI; Quantification of human possibilities. He concluded the talk by suggesting a few recommendations to be implemented, they are: Strive for ethical development of algorithms; Promote digital knowledge among young people, guided by Gospel values; Create “Truth Centers” in parishes. The enlightening talk was concluded with a caution that we should not overwhelmed by the AI technologies but we must use them for constructive purposes.
